Abstract
“Rainbow – Stories in Pictures” is a Bulgarian children’s comic magazine. Its first issue was published at the end of 1979. The magazine created its own style and is a classic image of Bulgarian illustration for that time. “Rainbow” gained immense popularity in the 1980s, when its circulation reached 180,000 copies. The magazine contains collections of comic series by many Bulgarian illustrators, children’s writers and animators. The series in the magazine are influenced by Bulgarian folklore, the political situation in Bulgaria at the time, classic literary works (“The Hobbit” by J. R. R. Tolkien, “Treasure Island” by Robert Louis Stevenson, “The Girl from Earth” by Kir Bulichov), world geography, ancient history, 20th century history, etc. Nikolai Dodov created perhaps the most recognizable character in Duga: the little boy ‘Darko’, whose hat resembled a red-and-white mushroom. During its twelve years of existence, Duga magazine provided a lot of opportunities for many talented Bulgarian artists. The art director and godfather of Duga was Georgi Gadelev. In November 2003, comics magazine Duga was relaunched, providing a platform for a whole new generation of Bulgarian comic artists.
