Abstract

His novel Yaban (Stepmother Earth, 1932) depicts the bitter experiences of a Turkish intellectual, Ahmet Celal, in the countryside after losing his arm in the Battle of Gallipoli. Though categorized as naturalist, the
novel has a romantic, anti-pastoral quality.
Ahmet Celal, who wants to continue his life in a quiet and calm place, is defined as wild because he is a foreigner wherever he goes. Although he has no connection with the villagers and is an officer, he is regarded as an enemy. Despite the fact that the whole country is under occupation, the villagers don’t care about it, after all; The arson of their house, the looting of their food, and the harassment of their women and daughters bring them to their senses. Seeing this situation, Ahmet Celal tries to escape with his lover.
