Miguel Hernández (1910–1942) was a Spanish poet and playwright born in Orihuela, Spain. Coming from a humble background, he was largely self-taught and began writing poetry inspired by nature and classical themes. Over time, his work evolved into socially committed and political poetry, especially during the Spanish Civil War, when he supported the Republican cause. Captured after the war, he died in prison at age 31 from tuberculosis. His legacy endures as one of the most powerful voices of 20th-century Spanish literature.

Abstract

Viento del pueblo (1937) by Miguel Hernández is a collection of poems written during the Spanish Civil War, embodying the voice of the people and their struggle. With powerful, direct language, Hernández champions the working class, denounces injustice, and calls for solidarity and resistance. The poems reflect both personal emotion and collective suffering, blending lyrical intensity with political commitment. Through vivid imagery and a deep sense of social responsibility, the poet becomes a spokesman for hope and resilience amid turmoil. This work marks a turning point in Hernández’s evolution toward engaged, combative poetry.
