Abstract

In Storia della bambina perduta, the last volume of tetralogy L’amica geniale, Elena Ferrante describes for the last time the particular bond that unites the two friends, Lina and Elena. In this volume Elena has run away with Nino, who believes she is the love of her life, however, she will only later notice that the man has the only goal of proving to be better than others. Lila, on the other hand, has become a successful entrepreneur. In the course of the narration the two friends remain in sweet expectation in the same period: so Imma and Tina are born. Both girls are lively, sunny and intelligent and will be the joy of their mothers until a tragic event, which will mark the life of Lila. The latter, for this reason, begins to be apathetic, disinterested in the future and to lose herself, not to care about anything, to want to let everything go to hell, however, she will always be there for Elena.
The author delves into the complex nature of friendship between two little girls, between two girls, between two women, following their individual growth, the way they influence each other, the good and bad feelings that nurture a true, robust relationship over the decades. It then narrates the effects of the changes affecting the district, Naples, Italy, in more than fifty years, transforming the friends and their bond. And all of this falls onto the page with the progress of the great popular narratives, dense and at the same time fast, deep and light, continuously overturning situations, revealing the secret depths of the characters, adding event to event without respite, but with the depth and power of voice to which the author has accustomed us. This is the kind of book that never ends. The author completes the narrative of Lila and Elena’s childhood and adolescence, but leaves us on the threshold of new great changes that are about to upset their lives and the their intense relationship. What is evident is the silent and rude way in which Lila influences Elena.
