He showed an active intellectual attitude in the face of the
problems of his age. He skillfully explained the distortions and contradictions in the social order,
and became the world-class representative of contemporary Turkish humorous literature. His
real name is Mehmet Nusret.
After studying at Darüşşafaka High School in Istanbul for two years, he graduated from Kuleli
Military High School in 1935, from the Military Academy in 1937, and from the Military Science
School in 1939. During his tenure as a first lieutenant, he was dismissed from the army on
charges of “abusing his duty and authority” (1944). After working as a grocer for a while, he
started journalism in 1945.

Nasreddin Hodja is a wise man born in Turkey, Eskişehir in 1208. He is
famous for his different approaches to events and his different attitudes during events. He
usually says what needs to be said where it needs to be said, as it should be said, without
offending the other person and by adding humor. He has an important place in Turkish culture.
