Abstract

Victor Hugo’s “Les Misérables” centers on the life story of Jean Valjean. Imprisoned for stealing a loaf of bread, Valjean’s sentence is extended to 19 years due to his escape attempts. Released in 1815, he harbors anger and resentment towards society. The bishop in the town of “D” shows him kindness. However, Valjean steals the bishop’s silver utensils and is caught. The bishop saves him by claiming the items were a gift, offering him a chance for a new beginning. Valjean eventually becomes wealthy through jewelry production and is elected mayor of the town. Police officer Javert is on his trail. To prevent an innocent man from being imprisoned, Valjean willingly serves a night in jail but escapes. He rescues Cosette, the daughter of Fantine, and becomes a father figure to her.
