Italo Svevo was born Aron Hector Schmitz (but known as Ettore at home) on 19 December 1861 in Trieste from a Jewish middle-class family. After attending the Segnitz boarding school in Bavaria and the “Pasquale Revoltella” Vocational Institute for Trade in Trieste, he started to work at the Trieste branch of the Austrian Union Bank.Svevo’s passion for literature inspired his extensive production of fiction and theater plays and he was actively involved in the local art circles and newspapers influenced by German impressionism.Joyce’s influence on Svevo triggered what Svevo defined «the Resurrection of Lazarus», restoring his faith in his literary skills and encouraging a different view of his work. Svevo died on 13 September 1928 of the consequences of a car accident.

Abstract
Zeno Cosini is a rich merchant from Trieste at rest, is induced by his doctor, to whom he turned for a psychoanalytic treatment in order to better understand himself and to heal from that form of sloth and abuse that disturbs the spirit and makes him unable to act. The author imagines that, having disappeared his client, the doctor publishes out of spite of his memories. They consist of six narrative blocks, each of which takes its name from a characterizing argument: “Smoking”, which is the vice contracted in adolescence and from which Zeno never manages to get rid, “The death of his father”, “The story of marriage”, “The wife and the lover”, “History of a trade association”and “Psychoanalysis”.
