Abstract

Giacomo is a man in his thirties who seems to have everything: a good job, an inherited apartment, charm with women and the ability to avoid any serious commitment. Yet something doesn’t work inside him: his life is marked by a routine made up of alarm clocks, trams, office, gym, pizza and bed, without impulses. Every morning he sees a girl he has never met on the tram, he observes her, he smiles at her, he becomes complicated by the anxiety of a meeting that will never be completed. When she, Michela, invites him for a coffee, she tells him that she will move to New York for work. This event breaks Giacomo’s balance: driven by friendship and a desire that until then he has only postponed, he decides to follow her. In New York they will live together for nine days with a fake “engagement”, with an end date, to avoid all the constraints of real relationships. In those days they will talk, they will open up, they will discover their respective secrets, they will confront truths and fears. But what remains when the deadline is already set and everyday life returns? In fact, the novel investigates the paradox of desire, freedom, bonding: what does it mean to love without giving up one’s space? What does it mean to live in the present when you know that farewell is already written? With a colloquial, ironic and direct style, Fabio Volo tells a love story that is also a tale of normality, of the fear of losing oneself, of the need to change but without knowing how. It is a work that speaks to the heart of those who feel life as “almost perfect” but feel that something is missing.
