Roberto Saviano was born in Naples on 22 September 1979. Coming from a family with a doctor father and a teaching mother, he graduated in Philosophy at the University of Naples Federico II. Since the mid-2000s he began collaborating with various newspapers, including “La Repubblica” and “L’Espresso”, as well as international newspapers such as “The New York Times” and “Die Zeit”. His fame exploded with the publication of “Gomorrah” in 2006, but his commitment cost him his private life: following the intimidation of the Camorra clans, he has lived under special protection since 13 October 2006. His work combines narrative, inquiry and civil commitment, making him an authoritative voice in the fight against organized crime and the diffusion of the culture of legality.

Abstract
In the book the author Roberto Saviano adopts a hybrid style between journalistic reporting and narrative storytelling to explore the economic empire of the Camorra in the Campania region. Through field investigations, direct testimonies and vivid and immersive writing, Saviano describes illicit trafficking, international ramifications, collusive relationships between the mafia, politics and entrepreneurship. The work breaks the silence on a deep-rooted and dangerous reality, showing how violence and organized crime are intertwined with the social fabric: fears, complicity, silences and opportunism. The author does not limit himself to denouncing but makes the’“invisible” visible through a language that challenges the reader, puts him in an observer position and at the same time shakes him morally. The result is a text that has had a strong cultural impact, both in Italy and abroad, and which has imposed a new model for criticism of the mafia in modern Western democracies.
