Hans Christian Andersen (1805–1875) was a Danish author best known for his fairy tales, including The Little Mermaid, The Ugly Duckling, and The Emperor’s New Clothes. Born in Odense, Denmark, to a poor family, Andersen rose from humble beginnings through talent and perseverance.
