In 1895-1898, together with his brother, the future writer Heinrich Mann, he resided in Italy, mainly in Rome and Palestrina. It was there that he began work on his epoch-making novel “The Buddenbrokes” and its publication in 1901 saved him from a severe life crisis. A rapid literary rise and public recognition followed – then he created the novel “Royal Highness” (1902) and the famous short stories “Tristan” (1903) and “Tonio Kröger” (1903). In 1929, Thomas Mann received the Nobel Prize for Literature, but not for his last work, but for the novel Buddenbroeks, created more than a quarter of a century ago.

Abstract
The Magic Mountain was first published in German in 1924. Mann began writing it in 1912 while at the Swiss sanatorium Davos, where his wife was being treated for lung disease. Mann’s idea was after “Death in Venice” to write a funny story in which the theme of death was interpreted in a parodic way. However, the story became a large-scale novel, written over 12 years and becoming one of the most iconic works of 20th century literature.
