Oğuz Atay was born in the Turkish province of Inebolu, Kastamonu in 1934. Atay studied civil engineering at the Istanbul Technical University School of Civic Engineering. He later became an associate professor there. After completing his military service, he worked at the ferry port of Kadıköy. He is best known for his novel Tutunamayanlar (The Disconnected), though he also wrote other novels, stories, a play and diary.

Abstract

The story starts after the suicide of Selim Işık. His friend, Turgut Özben, wants to learn why Selim died. He talks to people who knew Selim and reads his writings. Turgut learns that Selim was a sensitive man who did not fit into society. He didn’t like the rules, jobs, or fake relationships. As Turgut learns more, he also starts to feel lost and different. The book shows the lives of people who feel alone, confused, and disconnected. It is a story about friendship, sadness, and trying to understand life in a changing world.
