Blas de Otero was born in Bilbao and educated in Valladolid and Madrid, where he studied philosophy and literature. His poetry evolved from a deeply tormented spirituality, as reflected in Cántico espiritual (1942), towards a growing existential and political concern, evident in books such as Ángel fieramente humano (1950) and Redoble de conciencia (1951), two works that were later merged, with other poems, in Ancia (1958). In 1951 he joined the Communist Party. Pido la paz y la palabra (1975) is the most emblematic book of his last period, characterised by social poetry and poetry of denunciation.

Abstract
“Pido la paz y la palabra” is a collection of poems that reflects the poet’s concern for social injustice, the lack of freedom and the search for a better world, especially in the context of Franco’s Spain. The book, published in 1955, is characterised by a clear and direct language, with a colloquial tone and a marked dramatic character. The author seeks to connect with the majority of people and to express his desire for change, appealing to the reader’s emotions and conscience.
The book is a cry of denunciation against oppression and injustice, but also a hymn to hope and the need to build a fairer and freer world through words and collective action.
