Abstract

It was first published in 1924, marking the beginning of the poetic universe of Rafael Alberti, one of the great pillars of the Generation of 1927. This collection of poems is a hymn to nostalgia, to the lost land and the sea, that infinite horizon that the poet feels as a distant and longed-for home. In his verses, Alberti evokes his childhood in Puerto de Santa María and his uprooting after moving to Madrid, giving birth to a poetry that is lush, simple and full of symbolism.
In an accessible but profoundly lyrical language, “Marinero en tierra” also explores the themes of exile and the impossible return, elements that will run through the author’s entire oeuvre. The sea stands as a central metaphor, a symbol of freedom and longing, of the lost and the irretrievable. Through a precise musicality, close to the Andalusian folk tradition and the songs of the sailor, Alberti manages to create a direct emotional link with the reader. One hundred years after its publication, this collection of poems remains a key work of contemporary Spanish poetry. Its freshness, its evocation of lost landscapes and its deep emotional charge have kept its relevance intact. This commemorative edition invites us to rediscover the beauty and strength of a work that, since its appearance, has had a decisive influence on generations of poets and readers. A classic that reminds us of poetry’s ability to capture the ephemeral and make it eternal.
