Antonio Machado (1875–1939) was a Spanish poet and one of the leading figures of the Generation of ’98. Born in Seville, he studied in Madrid and later worked as a teacher of French. His poetry evolved from modernist introspection in Soledades to a deep reflection on Spain’s landscape and spirit in Campos de Castilla. Influenced by the Castilian plains, his work blends simplicity, emotion, and philosophical depth. During the Spanish Civil War, he supported the Republic and fled to France, where he died in exile. Today, he is celebrated as one of Spain’s greatest poets for his humanism and lyrical sincerity.

Abstract
“Campos de Castilla” is a landmark poetry collection first published in 1912 which marks a shift in Machado’s work from intimate, introspective lyricism toward a more external, objective engagement with landscape, Spain’s people and history. The collection reflects his lived experience in Castile: the stark terrain, the social realities, the historical legacy of Spain. It includes the powerful long poem “La tierra de Alvargonzález”, which evokes themes of envy, family conflict and elemental human fate. Through its landscapes and people, Machado meditates on time, impermanence, identity and the Spanish soul. The tone is more austere and sober than his earlier work, drawing on the terrain of Castile as a mirror for existential and cultural concerns.
