Abstract

In Flâneuse, Lauren Elkin explores the figure of the flâneuse, a woman who walks through cities with curiosity and awareness. Through personal experiences and stories of women like George Sand, Virginia Woolf, and Sophie Calle, Elkin examines how urban space has traditionally been dominated by men and how women have claimed the right to “flâner” the cities. The book blends memoir, cultural criticism, and urban history, offering a reflection on freedom, solitude, and female creativity in public space
