Abstract
The plot is innovative and very intriguing – in the 16th century, a miniaturist in Istanbul must produce a book commissioned by the crumbling Ottoman Empire in homage to the padishah. However, this jeweled edition carries something that causes a series of mysterious murders. When two court miniaturists are murdered while working on a secret book commission for the Sultan, the court orders an investigation that becomes an exploration of the roots of Islamic miniature painting and a reflection on the nature and form of the art, as well as its controversial relationship with the Islamic canon. The most beautiful woman in town is widowed. Her future is uncertain due to complex laws and societal relationships, as well as her own doubts and desires.
