Abstract

Created from the fire of words and the dust of history, “Clay” is a book about love as creation and punishment. About jealousy as a curse. About the mystical power of a master who, together with the clay, molds his destiny. Legend has it that in the 17th century, the original potters from the small village of Busintsi, Trani, received the blessing of the Turkish Sultan to be the only ones to travel freely within the borders of the empire to sell their goods. There was such primal power, beauty and simplicity in Busintsi ceramics that it opened both hearts and doors. It also opened the pages of “Clay”. The novel takes the raw soil of legend and turns it on the writer’s wheel to sculpt a story that flows like water and purifies like fire. She is Zhara – with a name born from the light of fire and the temperament of a raging mountain stream. He is Veliko – a master potter by heritage and by heart, who breathes with the clay and lives for the pot. Their meeting is like the touch of a flame with a breeze – the air can ignite the spark just as easily as it can cause it to smolder. But when the fate of the entire village stands in its way, their love unwittingly becomes a cure for the common pain. Veliko knows that from his fingers may come what will redeem the freedom of the Busina masters. But he does not suspect that the clay in his heart will stamp the Heat as his own.
