Abstract

Sirma has it all – a peaceful home, loving parents and good friends. But her life changes forever when she loses her two dearest friends to a gang of robbers. The village leaders are afraid to stand up to injustice and let the case go unpunished. Sirma is asked to keep quiet and swallow the pain, but she realizes that smiling and silence are not as useful as the outlaws’ guns. On St. George’s Day, eighteen-year-old Sirma dresses as a man and leads her own outlaw band, dedicated to protecting the mountain villages from the tyranny of Amza Bey and his thugs. But the path of the outlaw is harsh – deadly clashes with ferocious bandits, survival in the elements of the mountains, as well as the brutalization of her own company, are heavy burdens that she herself places on her shoulders. And her comrades-in-arms don’t even know that they are led by a woman. “Sirma” is a historical novel about the life of Sirma Strezova Krasteva, also known as Sirma Voivoda, who participated in the haiduk movement between 1794 and 1818. The lives of female haiduks were marked by hardships and condemnatory slurs, but Sirma Voivoda was one of the most successful representatives.
