Abstract
The protagonist of our story, Durmuş, is a young man living in his village with his mother. He earns his living by plowing his field with the oxen he owns. When his oxen die, he becomes unable to work or plow his field, and with no other source of income, he decides to go to İstanbul to find work and earn money. His friends from his village who live in İstanbul tell Durmuş that there’s someone named Müstakim Efendi in Edirnekapı looking for a servant and that he could work there.Müstakim Efendi tells Durmuş that in return for his services, he will provide him with one penny and one piece of advice annually. Although this offer doesn’t seem quite reasonable to Durmuş, he refuses the job at first but then he becomes very curious about the piece of advice and decides to take the job.
