Stanev is one of the classics in Bulgarian prose, an innovator in the genres of philosophical and historical novels, animalistic prose and social fiction. Abstract

World War I is coming to an end. Prisoners of war pass through the streets of Tarnovo. The commandant of the city, a meticulous officer, keeps his wife Lisa behind the thick walls of his home, among peach trees. One day Lisa finds the Serbian Ivo Obrenovic stealing fruit from her garden. Hunger led him to escape from the POW camp. Ivo is a Serbian lieutenant, a former music teacher, now a prisoner of war. Lisa is sad, lonely and sensitive. She is the commandant’s wife, devotedly locked in the long-standing habit of her marriage, childless. Compassion awakens in the young woman, which soon turns into great love. The commandant perceives the change in his wife. Riots break out in the city and he orders the camp to be moved. He orders them to shoot anyone who approaches the house.Meanwhile, the looming catastrophic end of the war intensifies the chaos in the city, thefts and riots begin. Ivo does not come to the meeting place, and Elisaveta understands that a decision has been made to move some of the prisoners. The night before Ivo leaves, Ivo goes to say goodbye to Elisaveta, but is shot and dies. Desperate Elisaveta shoots herself with her husband’s revolver. The film was released in 1964 and is the directorial debut of Valo Radev. The film reaped great success. While Valo Radev was writing the script, he noticed some of the actors. The first is Naum Shopov for the role of the French prisoner, and Nevena Kokanova perfectly fits the image of Lisa.
