Pencho Petkov Slaveikov was born Tryavna in a wealthy and respected family. His father is the famous poet and publicist Petko Rachov Slaveikov. The later Slaveikov family became famous later for giving Bulgaria some well-known cultural and political figures. In 1884, after a day playing at the Maritza Ice Rink, the tired Pencho falls asleep on the ice. The consequences are partial paralysis and difficult speech, adversities that the future creator will have to contend with for a lifetime. This led to resentment towards social life and to cultural life. In this initial resentment are the roots of the modernization goals that P. Slaveikov sets for himself. According to him new art has to be created, the said “art for art”, which is not burdened with the romanticism of the previous period.
