Abstract

Naná wakes up one morning to go to school, but instead of the familiar room she expected, she finds a large pink elephant standing in her bedroom. She simply can’t believe her eyes. Is it real? Did she imagine it? Or perhaps it was a dream? Suddenly things become strange: her mother acts as if she cannot see the elephant, and the only one who dares to cry out “Pink elephant in the room!” is Naná’s little brother.

Confused and a little scared, Naná and her family must figure out how to deal with this uninvited guest. The story, inspired by the familiar expression “a pink elephant in the room that nobody talks about,” becomes a gentle metaphor: for the things in life we all know are there, yet maybe ignore, and for the first step toward resolution being to simply acknowledge their existence.

With warm illustrations and playful tone, the book invites young readers to reflect on the invisible or unspoken “elephants” in their own rooms, at home, at school or inside themselves, and suggests that sometimes, talking about them is the way forward.
